A scenic flight or drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara in the west is the first stage of the Upper Mustang Overland Adventure. Our journey will commence with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, the primary hub of the Mustang district.

We will then head to Jomsom, a picturesque village nestled along the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. Our journey unfolds aboard a cozy private vehicle, winding through breathtaking landscapes adorned with majestic mountains.

On the journey from Jomsom to Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, our path winds through a series of distinctive villages, including Kagbeni, Chella, Samar, Syangboche, Ghiling, and Ghami. Each village is nestled amidst towering mountains and rolling hills, offering breathtaking views and showcasing diverse cultures and traditions.

During our journey back from Upper Mustang, we’ll stop by Muktinath temple. It is revered as a sacred pilgrimage destination by Hindus and Buddhists alike. After a day of touring and prayer at the temple, we’ll proceed to Jomsom. From there, we’ll hop on a flight back to Pokhara and continue our journey to Kathmandu.

The Upper Mustang Overland Adventure streamlines the expedition for individuals with busy schedules or anyone seeking the quickest path to explore the Mustang Valley.

The Upper Mustang is best visited during the spring season. It has the most stunning vista and the three-day Tiji festival one of Upper Mustang’s most well-known celebrations, takes place in this season.

You can also make this trip during autumn. Although the air may be dry and cold, you will witness several mountains, including Mount Annapurna, Mount Dhaulagiri, Mount Nilgiri, and many more mountain ranges since the sky is clearer.

This adventurous trip falls under the category of moderately difficult and doesn’t require extensive walking, as it primarily involves traveling in a vehicle. However, you still need to be in good health and have high stamina. The altitude sickness and problems in breathing also won’t be a problem since we will only reach an altitude of 3900 meters.

Still, it is better to be safe than sorry, so it is recommended to carry Diamox and other similar medications While exploring higher altitudes, make sure to regularly hydrate yourself and avoid alcoholic beverages, as they can easily dehydrate you.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Arrival to Kathmandu and Domestic flight to Pokhara

Upon your arrival, one of your representatives will be waiting for you at the airport to assist you and accompany you to your hotel. After a restful time and a brief overview of the journey, we’ll board the flight to Pokhara, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of Nepal’s natural beauty.

From the window seat, you can enjoy the rugged hills, serene lakes, and impressive mountain ranges, including Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre, in the picturesque Pokhara valley. Upon reaching Pokhara, we’ll dive into boarding activities and fully explore the city. We will spend the night in Pokhara.

Day 2:

Flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and Drive to Ghami

We will depart from Pokhara and arrive at Jomsom Airport after breakfast. Jomsom Airport is located between desolate hills and majestic snow-covered peaks. The Upper Mustang Overload adventure offers an unrivaled experience for travelers seeking spiritual enlightenment.

Starting at Kagbeni, the gateway to Lower Mustang, we traverse through dirt roads to reach the Chele checkpoint, entering Upper Mustang. Here we can explore Ghami’s whitewashed homes, connect with locals, and learn about their lifestyle. We will spend a night here.

Day 3:

Drive from Ghami to Lo Manthang

After breakfast, we’ll journey from Ghami to Lo Manthang. Passing through rivers like the Ghami, Charang, and Dokpolo, and crossing the 3870-meter Tsarang La pass, we will reach Lo Manthang.

Along the way, we will witness the breathtaking views of Annapurna I, Tilicho, and Nilgiri mountain ranges.

Upon reaching Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, elegant white-washed homes welcome us. Following a short break, we’ll head out to explore the charming streets of this ancient walled city. After a good night’s rest, we will venture out to explore Lo tomorrow.

Day 4:

Explore Lo Manthang

On day four, we’ll explore prestigious monasteries and temples in Lo Manthang, capturing the essence of Tibetan Buddhist culture. The city, enclosed amidst rugged landscapes, offers hidden treasures best discovered on foot. This city is mainly a Buddhist area dominated by Lhoba and Bon tribes.

We’ll delve into the village’s history and visit the Champa Lhakang, a significant Buddhist temple with a massive Buddha statue and intricate Mandala paintings. Later, we will take a walk to Namgyal Gompa, serving as both a courtroom and a religious center.

Day 5:

Drive from Lo Manthang to Muktinath and then to Jomsom

Today, we will visit the renowned Muktinath temple, a highlight of the Upper Mustang Overland Adventure. Traveling down a dirt road passing lodgings and stores, we will reach the temple known for its two ponds and 108 spring taps, believed to absolve past wrongs. Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims bathe here for atonement.

After a brief tour, we will make our to Jomsom, enjoying stunning views of the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri mountains. In Jomsom, we will unwind with local apple whiskey, music, and folktales. Overnight at Jomson.

Day 6:

Flight from Jomsom to Pokhara

At dawn, we will set out for a sunrise adventure in Jomsom, then board a domestic flight to Pokhara. Following a light breakfast, we will board a picturesque flight over the Annapurna Massif and its stunning neighboring peaks.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, we will head to our hotel to unwind and relax for the time being. Afterward, we will explore the city, including the World Peace Pagoda, Davis Falls, Mahendra Cave, Bat Cave, Bindabasini Temple, and International Mountain Museum.

Day 7:

Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

On our final day, we will return to Kathmandu by bus along the Marsyangdi and Trishuli Rivers. We will witness stunning views of snow-capped mountains and waterfalls as we pass through charming villages like Damauli, Dumre, and Mugling.

Upon reaching Kathmandu, your team will escort you to the hotel. You’ll have the option to unwind or explore Nepal’s vibrant atmosphere by taking a tour of Thamel and shopping.

Day 8:

Final Departure

Today, you will be escorted to the airport as you bid farewell to Nepal. This will mark the end of our exhilarating adventure in the Upper Mustang. Exploring Upper Mustang promises to be an unforgettable journey, one that will undoubtedly shape our lives among the many adventures we embark on.
